ABOUT THE ARTIST

Chris Brodbeck (b. 1994, Los Angeles, CA) is an artist living and working in Los Angeles California. Working with a variety of scale and material, he creates paintings that assert themselves as symbolic representations of cosmological ideas pertaining to the macro-micro range of perception. The surface of his paintings are a record of its process. Layers of pentimenti form from a incessant re working, toppled with bright colors and loose gestural brush strokes. Asking the viewer to observe the emotive act of painting in the studio. His interest in eastern and western philosophy assimilate into the work from the angle that spontaneous action is nature rather than mere replication of natural forms. They lend way to a somatic form of painting that allows for the hand to move freely so the body can express itself through the subconscious. Giving air to a personal mythology unforeseen to the rationale component of the mind. Around 2021,He began to bring together tools he used from his job as a house painter in Santa Monica,CA. Heavy drop cloths were now for stretching his canvas’, dust debris as ethereal powder substance, and a pump sprayer for a more improvisational approach to painting. These materials became a way to work with tools that felt like an extension of his body. In this way, Brodbeck’s paintings seek to investigate the nature of the Self and the nature of painting. Asking the question, “What is inside oneself that can be expressed with form and color?”
